Jhonny Gonzalez Stops Abner Mares In Round 1

Tonight in Carson California, there was big time action in the ring, we had a combination of four rounds in two fights. In a massive upset, Jhonny Gonzalez stopped Abner Mares in round one. The trouble started for Mares about mid way through the first round when Jhonny Gonzalez caught him with a thunderous left hand to the jaw, Mares went down very hard and was never able to really recover and was stopped moments later by referee Jack Reiss. Gonzalez is now a three time champion, and has recovered the WBC title that he lost to Daniel Ponce De Leon just last year. The future is no longer as bright for Abner Mares who prior to tonight had found himself on many pound for pound lists and on the verge of super-stardom. It seems likely that he will take some time off and the return to the junior featherweight class.

In the televised under-card, the always exciting Leo Santa Cruz captured his second title in as many weight classes, beating up and stopping the very durable Victor Terrazas. Santa Cruz badly shut Terrazas’ eye in the second round, and then easily put him away in the third. From here the future looks really good for Santa Cruz, he is in an action packed weight class with big names such as Nonito Donaire, Guillermo Rigondeaux, Vic Darchinyan, and Joseph Agbeko.. just to name a few.

Tonight has definitely taken away a lot of the luster around the possibility of a Mares vs Santa Cruz showdown. Mares will likely have to have some time off and get a win or two before we will be able to see them face off against one another.
