Sonny Bill Dominates Chauncy Welliver

Sydney, Australia: Rugby standout Sonny Bill Williams dominated the far more experienced American heavyweight Chauncy Welliver tonight. The scores were 80-72 (twice) and 79-72 in the eight round heavyweight contest. Sonny Bill now improves his professional record to 7-0 (3 KOs).

Welliver started off fast in round one, looking to catch the less experienced Sonny Bill off-guard. The round was extremely sloppy and neither man landed anything of note.

Round two was fought at a much slower pace, which greatly favored the slicker sharper Sonny Bill. Sonny Bill began to control the distance and land his jab at will. Welliver had his moments but he was far less effective.

In rounds three and four Sonny Bill started to really dig to the body of the obese Welliver, who seemed to take the shots fairly well. Welliver began to appear visibly discourage however, and did his best Ricardo Mayorga impression sticking his chin out and asking Williams to hit him. Williams remained calm and composed however, and continued to outwork to poorly conditioned Welliver.

The rest of the fight followed the same script. Welliver would rush in and smother his ineffective punches, while the calm and cool Williams would wipe his face with the jab and dig crisp body punches to his flabby midsection.

Tonight’s win proved that the inexperienced Sonny Bill has what it takes to box smart and beat more experienced fighters. Whether or not Williams can replicate his success on the Rugby field in a boxing ring still remains to be seen, but this was a step in the right direction.

Following the fight Williams praised his trainer Tony Mundine and called for a future fight with Cronulla Shark’s captain Paul Gallen, who also picked up a win on the under-card.
