Floyd Mayeather casually announced the fight most boxing insiders expected all along at a BET awards show. He will rematch the hard punching Argentine Marcos Maidana on September 13th live on Showtime PPV. But, is this the smartest choice? Is this the fight the fans want to see?

The official PPV numbers for Mayweather vs Maidana were never released. Which leads you to believe that they were very disappointing. There are many reasons for this, the under-card certainly did no favors to the event. There was not one competitive fight on the card. They banked too hard on cashing in on the name value of Amir Khan and Adrien Broner. It didn’t work. Also, Maidana for however entertaining he is, is just not a big draw. He was also not viewed as being a real threat to the long time pound for pound king. Will this be different now following their back and forth affair in May?

Most fans expected to see Mayweather move up to 155lbs and take on Miguel Cotto for the lineal middleweight title. It doesn’t appear to be even a consideration for Mayweather at this point. There were also rumblings of a fight between Mayweather and Shawn Porter. These proved to be just that.

Are there anymore huge fights left for Mayweather? Fight fans seem to be losing interest in him. He will likely fight three more times and then retire for good. With Maidana being one of those three, will there be any chance for the next two to bring back the excitement and money that surrounded his history making bouts with Oscar de la Hoya and Saul Alvarez? Only time will tell.
