Camden, NSW – Former unified WBA and IBF middleweight champion Daniel “Real Deal” Geale kicked off his training camp on Thursday for his May 24th fight against English contender Matthew Macklin. The middleweight bout will be broadcast by HBO and is scheduled for 12 rounds. No venue has been selected yet.
Today I had the opportunity to go to the Grange Old School Boxing Gym to catch up with Geale. Upon my arrival, I found him working the mitts with longtime trainer Graham Shaw. They worked hard on combination punching and timing. I noticed immediately that he was really sitting on his punches and making every one count. Geale looked extremely sharp for a fighter only three days into camp. He appeared to be very close to weight as well, which is great to see so early on. After a round of shadow boxing, it was on to crunches and ab work.
Following training I sat down with Geale to talk about his upcoming fight, as well as some possible future opponents. Although completely focused on Macklin, he made it no secret that he is ready to face the best the middleweight division has to offer.
Geale will be looking to erase any doubts created by his close decision loss to England’s Darren Barker last August. He wants to make a statement against Macklin and this time return from America with a victory.
