This Saturday night unified junior welterweight king Danny Garcia faces fringe contender Mauricio Herrera in Bayamon, Puerto Rico. The fight will be Garcia’s first time fighting in Puerto Rico. On the under-card unbeaten heavyweight and number 3 rated WBC contender Deontay WIlder faces his longtime friend Malik Scott. Also, Daniel Ponce de Leon rematches the once promising Juan Manuel Lopez.
Garcia is coming off the biggest win of his career. He outpointed hard hitting Argentine Lucas Matthysse on the biggest stage of them all, a Floyd Mayweather under-card. Herrera is currently on a two fight winning streak albeit against lesser competition. His biggest win came in the form of a controversial decision over WBO junior welterweight champion Ruslan Provodnikov.
Herrera is a very questionable opponent for someone on the level of Danny Garcia. This fight is a major step backwards for a fighter in the lower part of the pound for pound list. However, don’t be surprised if Herrera proves to be tougher than expected. Danny Garcia will be too much for Herrera though. Garcia by unanimous decision.
Deontay Wilder will be facing his stiffest challenge to date when he faces Malik Scott. Scott is looking to continue his rebound following his loss to Derek Chisora last year. The lone draw on his record came against Vyacheslav Glazkov in one of the worst decisions in recent years. Scott completely out-boxed Glazkov only two be robbed on the scorecards.
Wilder is one fight away from a WBC title shot against the winner of Cris Arreola vs Bermane Stiverne. Scott should prove to be a decent test early. Going into the middle rounds Wilder will catch Scott. WIlder by KO in the middle rounds.
Daniel Ponce de Leon gets the chance for revenge against Juan Manuel Lopez. In 2008 Lopez knocked out de Leon in only one round. That will not be the case this time around. Lopez has been on a steady decline since his first knockout loss to Orlando Salido in 2011. He has been stopped two more times since and his last notable win came against the over-the-hill Rafael Marquez in 2010. Daniel Ponce de Leon by knockout.
