Gary Shaw’s reports earlier this week seem to be true. HBO, and team Golovkin have rejected an April fight with former unified middleweight champion Daniel Geale. Golovkin will likely be facing junior middleweight disappointment James Kirkland in a fight nobody is calling for.
Kirkland, who resurrected his career to a degree in early December by roughing up Glenn Tapia, last fought at middleweight when he was knocked out by Nobuhiro Ishida in one round. Kirkland, while entertaining, is completely undeserving of a shot at the middleweight title. Hopefully the WBO will do it’s part and keep this sham of a fight from taking place.
The world’s most avoided fighter (according to Abel Sanchez) Gennady Golovkin, has had a steady diet of junior middleweights during his rise through the middleweight rankings. He has amazingly fought only one real middleweight contender in Matthew Macklin, To his credit he dominated Macklin and stopped him with a crushing body shot.
Golovkin faces the unheralded Osumanu Adama on February 1st, in Monte Carlo.
