Peter Quillin: On The Outside Looking In

The feud between Showtime and HBO, and Goldenboy and Top Rank has negatively affected many fighters and fans alike. Although, no fighter has been affected as much as WBO middleweight champion, Peter “Kid Chocolate” Quillin (29-0 21 KOs). The 30 year old Brooklyn native will make the second defense of his title this weekend, on the under-card of the Hopkins vs Murat fight in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

This will be the second fight in a row in which he has had to face an unheralded opponent for a low paycheck. The big money middleweight names, are all fighting on rival network HBO, a network that has refused to show Quillin due to his promotional company. This is why in a loaded division, with names like Martinez, Golovkin, and Chavez, that the fans a left with mediocre bouts like Quillin vs Rosado, and Golovkin vs Stevens. A big win this weekend will do little to change this, Quillin will be left with few, if any notable options and everyone will continue to suffer.

Quillin’s best hope would be to face either Daniel Geale, or the winner of Darren Barker vs Felix Sturm. Should Matthew Macklin get a couple of wins, he could be a possible future foe, although one that few people would be excited for. In a perfect world we could see fights like Quillin vs Golovkin or Quillin vs Martinez; although sadly, we live in one ruined by Bob Arum, and HBO’s bloated egos.

Who would you like to see Quillin face? How would he do? Let me know in the comments below. Also, look out for predictions later in the week.

    • Agreed, it is costing us amazing fights; like Quillin vs Golovkin, Rigondeaux vs Santa Cruz, Matthysse vs Provodnikov, Bradley vs Mayweather, Bradley vs Broner…. the list goes on and on.
